Three Ways to Detect Deception in an Organization

Deception detection in an organization refers to the investigative methods employed to determine an individual’s credibility and truthfulness. The detection of deception is widely determined by the consideration of specific physiological and behavioral cues along with situational and contextual information.

 

Techniques used to Detect Deception in an Organization 

The historians are not completely sure regarding when or where deception detection methods originated. But, one thing is for sure that for centuries, people have been attempting to figure out how to determine whether someone is lying or not. Over time, the deception detection methodologies have developed drastically, shifting from non-scientific testing that is, Salem Witch Trials to biologically acquainted ones that are, graphology and phrenology. In the present time, deception detection in an organization usually combines human observation that is behavioral psychology and technology which include artificial intelligence and polygraphs. Generally, emotional cues, cognitive approach, and the attempt to control approach are incorporated in detecting deception in an organization

 

Emotional Cues to Detect Deception 

People hold strong opinions concerning the purpose of emotional cues in detecting deception. It is considered as the most influential way of detecting deception. Emotion-based approach (EBA) indicates the behavioral differences between truthtellers and liars which are associated with the emotions senders experience. Liars “leak” complex behavioral cues that will betray and uncover their lies. This is referred to as emotional cues which can help in detecting deception in an organization. 

 

Cognitive Approach to Detect Deception 

Detecting deception allows for a state-of-the-art pattern that focuses on the methods by which new psychology-based cognitive approaches can enhance the results and practice in the field. The cognitive approach incorporates comprehensive coverage of the most advanced scientific progress in detecting deception and their associations for real-world usage. It analyses current hurdles in the field between true and false purposes like counter-interrogation strategies, cross-cultural deception, lying networks, and discriminating. The cognitive approach to detect deception reveals a host of unique approaches that are based on cognitive psychology. It has the potential to enhance practice and results, as well as the strategic use of imposing cognitive load, covert lie detection, evidence, and response times. 

 

The Attempted Control Approach to Detect Deception 

The most notable result in detecting deception is verbal and non-verbal behaviors which are attempted to appear honest. Generally, this approach does not strongly correlate with deception or truthfulness. To date, very few reliable verbal and non-verbal signs of deception have been observed.

 

Normally, the liars speak in a higher-pitched tone, which might be the outcome of encountered arousal. But, the differences in pitch between truth-tellers and liars are very small and it can be detected only with the help of technical equipment. However, sometimes liars’ speeches sound tenser than the speeches of the truth-tellers’. This can be the other result of arousal. Also, speech errors like slip of the tongue, repetition of sentence or words, or sentence incompletion occur more frequently during deception. There are indications of communication span being shorter for liars and fewer illustrators. The reduction in body movements might be the outcome of overcontrol of behavior or lie complexity. As compared to the person telling the truth, the liars vocally manage to sound more passive, less expressive, and more uncertain. 

 

Final Words

Under certain conditions, there are some differences between the liars and the truth-tellers. However, it is imminent to understand that these differences are not large. The practical value of these deception detections in an organization may be quite low.
