5 Issues with Millennials in the Workplace

Organizations that have a high percentage of millennials in executive positions and top management led by the older generation, may face a lot of issues that can be typically termed as millennial issues. The clash of ideas, ideas, and preferences of millennials and elder generation can give rise to various problems. Especially when Millennials dominate workplaces, you need to have an idea about issues that may arise out of their presence. The fact is that millennials have eclipsed both Baby Boomers and Generation X and they now influence how businesses operate. Here is a list of issues that businesses may face with millennials.

They Want to Make Their Presence Felt

Millennials are most passionate about their impact on local as well as global scale. They expect that their employers would provide them with opportunities for actions that affect societies positively. According to one survey, companies who empower employees to make a difference to society, have more loyal employees.

Flexible Working

Millennials crave flexibility, especially when it comes to working hours. 9 to 5 jobs are not their forte. They want flexibility. In fact, many of them are happy with being mobile workers or working outside their offices such as from home, on the go or a coffee shop. It is not that they are confined to 8 hours a day work; they are not averse to stay awake at night and slog for 10-12 hours a day. They just don’t like the idea of being confined to normal business hours.

Passion is the Key

Millennials are passionate about specific roles and responsibilities. Studies have found that 44& of millennials are not bothered so much about salary, health insurance, paid time off or vacation as they are about their roles in specific projects.

An Inclusive Workplace

According to a survey conducted by Deloitte, most of the millennials love straight talking. They also air their opinions quite passionately. Listening to them and appreciating their opinions is one of the best ways to make millennials feel that they are in an inclusive workplace.  In fact, the study has found that Millennials thrive in inclusive workplaces. They are averse to a rules-based approach or an authoritarian environment.

Transparency and Feedback

These people love transparency and that includes a gamut of things like employee salaries, impact on the environment, etc. They also love regular reviews and feedback about their roles and responsibilities. They look for mentoring whenever they feel like getting stuck in specific roles.

Conclusion

Millennials may bring a change to the ways organizations conduct their business and hire workers. They feel that they have a right to get whatever they want and whenever they want. It may be about a product or a service. This means that they have a consumer expectation that changes the very fundamentals of businesses.

They are not as tech-savvy as the generation Z, yet they have a rendezvous with technology and personal gratification with the underpinning of consumer behavior. Organizations need to understand their ideas, preferences, and ideals and deal with them accordingly. This may boost the workings of organizations.
