What-to-do-If-You-are-Under-Investigation-at-Work

What to do If You are Under Investigation at Work

Situations may arise when you are called by your local HR contact and told about a meeting with the concerned manager. It may be about a complaint against you regarding a business deal, an operational issue, a misdemeanor at work place, or something else. Whatever is the situation, you need to meet the manager and explain your position. You may feel lonely, but there is no point in feeling helpless. Investigation at Work is common and if you have not done anything wrong, there is nothing to be afraid about.

However, if you have a fair idea about what to expect and how to handle the situation, you may not find yourself in a completely alien environment.

Let us learn how you can do that.

Don’t Keep the Manager Waiting

Making the manager wait, when there is an Investigation at Work, is a sign of evading an interview. This is a very important meeting for you since your job may be at stake. You need to make your stand clear, and you have some rights too as employee rights in investigation. You may get your departmental manager, team leader or the HR manager to help you out. These are neutral parties. So, get things cleared from them and proceed to the interview at the anointed time. Avoidance may be viewed as insubordination. If there is a really unavoidable reason not to attend the interview, you need to reach out to your team leader or HR manager to explain the urgency. The best thing is to do it in person and also propose an alternate day and time.

Get Things Cleared

To make your stand clear, you need to understand what the investigation is all about, and what are its implications for you. To do that you need to take some time, collect all the relevant mails, documents, and memos that you think are relevant to the proceedings. So, ask for some time and proceed to collect all these.

Go Through Your Rights

Even if you are under investigation, there are some rights for your protection. You need to have an idea about employee rights in investigation. There are certain employee rights that you can invoke at these times. So, call an attorney and go through your rights.

Be Careful While Signing Documents

You need to be very careful about signing documents. Don’t sign on any document without fully understanding the implications.

Ask for Records

Keeping records of the interview helps if things go awry. In case any of your spoken or written record during the interview is being misinterpreted, you can uphold the truth with your own records.

Contact an Attorney

You have the right to hire an attorney and get to know your employee right in investigation. You can even bring him or her during the interview. This helps in case some criminal allegation is being labeled against you.

So, these are some of the things to follow if you think you are under investigation.
