What is meant by quiet quitting?

What is quiet quitting?

The quiet quitting trend has been gaining attention since August 2020, when a TikToker named Bryan Creely made a TikTok on it. It does not mean that workers quit quietly, without notifying HR, their manager, or their employer, but rather that they restrict themselves to their job description only and do not overwork themselves or achieve too much. It implies that workers don’t have to put in any additional effort or time in order to advance in their careers.

How did it originate?

Amid the pandemic, America and several other nations experienced great resignation or big quit, in which a significant number of people left their jobs.  Many of them then began practicing quiet quitting, because it was at this point that people began to recognize the value of holistic health and began putting equal emphasis on their physical, emotional, and mental well-being. The shift in mindset caused the trend to rise since the pandemic put the health of both physical and emotional people at risk. People felt much better by establishing boundaries at work. Employees who started practicing quiet quitting experienced overall greater mental health, with less stress, and less anxiety.

This trend of “quiet quitting” and changing jobs is quite common among millennials and Gen Z, who do not subscribe to the “grind and hustle” mentality set by the older generation who used it to get promotions and get exploited by their workplace culture. The current generation wants better work-life balance, better pay, and a healthy work environment.

How has it impacted employees and the organization?

This trend may have existed before, but Gen Z is more vocal about it than previous generations. On the other hand, some people deny its existence entirely. According to Bryan Creely, it’s better to be lazy rather than quit, not just being lazy and not working, but limiting yourself to what your job requires. The other Tiktok that went viral was by Zaid K, who stated in a Tiktok that “your worth is not defined by your level of productivity output”. In the period of Covid, people were forced to rethink their priorities and set boundaries in order to maintain a healthy work-life balance in the face of unreliable life circumstances.

There has been an increase in employees practicing quiet quitting which triggered the HR professionals, managers, and employers because if employees practice “quiet quitting”, it negatively affects the productivity of their organization, employee morale, and the quality of their productivity. Quiet quitting hinders the organization’s ability to achieve its objectives.
