The Pitfalls of Working from Home

At present, the world is going through a big crisis. People are making a lot of adjustments to manage and survive in this COVID-19 crisis. Organizations are switching to work from home culture. Work from home provides opportunities for flexible working that helps in the growth of the business. Also, it enables employees to be more productive. However, there are two sides of the same coin, and the work from home culture also has some pitfalls.

Let’s have a look at a few common pitfalls of working from home and decide whether it is a boon or a bane.

Pitfalls of Working from Home

1. Lack of Motivation

The employees need to be motivated to achieve the desired business outcomes. Motivation drives the employees to power and helps in achieving their goals. Working at an office with fellow workers who share a common goal and purpose can be a great source of motivation. Working remotely lacks this kind of environment. Self-motivation works to some extent, but it is not always sufficient to keep an employee going.

2. Lack of Office Equipment

Employees working remotely do not have access to necessary office equipment like high-speed internet, high-end laptop, or fax/xerox machine. The lack of these types of equipment can add to the distress of the employees while working from home as they face hard times in replicating the work environment at home.

3. Distractions

Focus and concentration are significant factors that are required while working to deliver exceptional results. It is very difficult to concentrate on work with the distractions of the family and other household noises.

4. Burnout

Flexible working hours are among the advantages of working from home. It allows the employees to structure the days according to their convenience. However, this can be a pitfall for some employees as they may forget to distinguish between home-life and work-life. This can lead to longer working hours, which can further cause burnout and stress. Working in an office environment helps the employees to draw the line between private and professional life.

5. Risk to productivity

It is believed that remote working enhances productivity. But, among all the alluring distractions like the left on a cliffhanger web-series, spending time with family, mid-day naps, etc. makes it tough to concentrate and focus on work for long. Also, remote working can make the employee feel isolated and not motivated to work productively.

Final Words

Nothing in this world is perfect. The grass always looks greener on the other side. Everything has its advantages and pitfalls, and it is up to the people to make the best out of everything.

There are some employees who are comfortable working from home. On the other hand, some employees are waiting to return to the office and meet their co-workers.

The above-listed pitfalls are some of the reasons why a few businesses are still not on-board with the notion of remote work. This concern is real. However, there are a lot of ways that can help the organizations to get past these pitfalls.
