Navigating Fair Housing Challenges with Hoarding Tenants
Depending on which source you quote, between two and six percent of the US population-7,000,000 to 20,000,000 people - suffer from hoarding disorder, which is listed in the DSM-5 and generally recognized as a disability under the Fair Housing Act. Ranging in severity from severe clutter to health and safety issues and animal hoarding, it is essential that multifamily professionals recognize and address hoarding situations as soon as possible. Add the number of people and resources needed as well as the fact that most people who hoard don’t think they have an issue and resolving hoarding situations is one of the most difficult and complex issues a manager must resolve.
