Short Description
A practical, end-to-end course on planning and carrying out layoffs lawfully, communicating difficult decisions effectively, supporting affected employees, and stabilizing the workforce that remains.
Overview
Layoffs are among the most consequential actions an organization can take. Even when the business rationale is legitimate, a poorly planned reduction can create legal exposure, operational disruption, employee-relations problems, reputational damage, and lasting distrust. This course gives HR and business leaders a practical framework for managing the full layoff lifecycle, from the initial business decision through post-layoff stabilization. Participants will examine the points where a defensible workforce decision can become a legal or employee-relations problem, including unclear rationales, inconsistent selection criteria, adverse impact, retaliation, WARN and mini-WARN obligations, wage and hour issues, benefits and severance errors, incomplete documentation, confidentiality failures, and unprepared managers. The emphasis is not on turning HR professionals into attorneys. It is on helping them recognize risk early, ask better questions, preserve reliable evidence, and know when employment counsel or another specialist should be involved.
The session then moves from legal requirements to real-world execution. Participants will learn how to establish decision rights, build a disciplined timeline, define and document selection criteria, coordinate legal review, prepare leaders and managers, develop communication materials, conduct employee notifications, support affected employees, and respond to the concerns of those who remain. The course connects compliance requirements to the actual work of HR: challenging assumptions, reviewing data, planning announcement sequencing, preparing for difficult questions, protecting dignity, maintaining business continuity, and confirming that the final action matches the stated rationale. It also addresses the human impact of layoffs, including fear, anger, grief, reduced trust, increased workload, productivity disruption, unwanted turnover, and survivor guilt. By the end of the program, participants will have a repeatable framework they can adapt to their organization, workforce, jurisdictions, and risk tolerance. They will leave with practical questions, controls, communication approaches, and implementation steps they can use immediately. Because legal requirements continue to change, the course also reinforces the need to verify current federal, state, and local rules before acting.
