To help identify and prevent fraud, the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) created a more effective way to verify a person’s income. The EIV (Enterprise Income Verification) System is a web-based computer system containing employment and income information on people participating in HUD’s rental assistance programs. The information is updated weekly to reflect current earnings and employment status.

What is EIV?

The EIV system provides a centralized system for verifying the employment and income of public housing and voucher program participants. Local housing authorities that use this system may provide employment and income information on their participants to other agencies that administer rental assistance programs for people with disabilities, seniors, and the homeless. This information can be used to verify employment and income for participants who need to be placed in specific units or locations.

Related Webinars

Information of Income Reported in EIV

It is a law that all of the income of social security is accounted for by the EIV. A person who has income from sources other than their job (including interest, alimony, or other income) must contact the EIV and pay taxes on this income. The only exception to this is if a person is self-employed, in which case the income is reported to the IRS. This is why those who file as head of household on their taxes cannot claim a dependency exemption for their spouse.

In the EIV, the information of income is reported because it is required by the Social Security Administration (SSA). It was originally a comprehensive report that listed the names and addresses of all the people who were on Social Security disability. The original report was over 100 pages long and included complete information for anyone who was receiving disability at that time. This information was collected from the Social Security Administration and other agencies. The Social Security Administration (SSA) only makes this report available to the public on request.
