The federal FHA (Fair Housing Act) outlaws sex discrimination, including sexual harassment. This impacts the terms or conditions of housing and is used as a foundation for housing decisions. Also, it has the effect of unreasonably interfering with housing prerogatives, or creates an intimidating, offensive, or hostile environment. The toolkit incorporates:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Information about the legal rights;\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Steps to take if the legal rights have been violated; and\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">How and where to turn for help<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The Fair Housing Act (FHA)\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">According to HUD (the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development), housing discrimination is a serious nationwide issue. It is estimated that more than two million cases of discrimination in housing occur every year. However, less than 1% of these occurrences are filed. Reporting discrimination can assist both the complainant and others by preventing the housing provider from engaging in discriminatory behavior.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Under the Fair Housing Act (FHA), housing providers including management companies, home sellers, homeowners\u2019 insurance firms, landlords, real estate agents, and lending institutions are prohibited from discriminating on the basis of;<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Race\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">National Origin\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Color\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Religion\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Disability<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Familial Status, or<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Sex\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Sexual harassment is recognized as a form of sex discrimination that is outlawed by the Fair Housing Act. Several states and cities have laws with further protections against harassment.
